Thankfully, we are still allowed to get out and walk and exercise and keep our health in check maintaining the social distancing protocols.
I know a lot of us used to gyms and pools are struggling to find inspiration to work out at home, also considering the lack of a Smith machine in our living rooms.
Equipment or no equipment, there are always plenty of things around the house to use in the form of resistance and weights to make exercise fun again.
... time for us to get creative ...
If you have young kids, use them as weights, I bet they would have fun with it too.
Here are a few ways you can use everyday things to make your workouts at home fun and beat the boredom of quarantine.
- Shoulder press/bicep curls/tricep extensions using a crockpot. Who would have thought? It's heavy enough but also broad and stable enough to be lifted on one palm. You can always increase the number of repetitions and sets you do for maximum effort.
- Bridges/step ups/"box" jumps using your couch. Make sure it's well supported and doesn't slide from under you. It's soft enough to even challenge your ankle stability and balance as well.
- Squats with made-up barbells. Grab a stick you have lying around and on each end either slide in milk cans or if you have old oil cans they work as well. Home-made barbell at your service!
- Decline push ups. Prop your couch or chair against the wall. Pop your feet up on it and push away.
- Spare tyres lying around you haven't disposed of for months now? Flip 'em. It's a great upper body workout and stresses the cardiac system as well.
- Deadlifts with your couch. Turns out it has a lot more uses then just sitting on it. Just putting it out there, lift only ONE end not the entire couch.
- Upright rows/bench press/chest press kid edition. If you have young kids, make them a part of your exercise routine. It keeps them entertained as well, lets you spend time with your family and keeps you going with your health goals.
We seem to be stuck in a surreal world with no clear direction.
This is the time for us to get creative, make the most of what we have and be the best versions of ourselves.
