The man, who appeared at Ararat Magistrates' Court on Monday via videolink, assaulted a fellow inmate in the prison's kitchen on March 17.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Haughton told the court the accused had approached the victim "ranting and raving" before pushing him to the floor. The victim did not require medical attention.
A security officer witnessed the incident.
The man pleaded guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Barbara Spencer sentenced the man to one month in prison, to be served concurrently.
The man is up for parole in December. An additional conviction was not recorded against the accused.
Assaults between inmates have been on the rise across the past four years.
