Ararat's Roger Phillis spoke about his health journey at the event on Tuesday, October 1.

Hosted at the Stawell Neighbourhood House, organiser John Bradley said the day was a success, with about 20 people attended the awareness the day.

"Roger is a survivor of cancer and has a story to tell like everyone," he said.

"He does a lot of speaking around the region and in Melbourne."

The Stawell Prostate Support Group meets bi-monthly at the Stawell Neighbourhood House on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm.

"We have about five to six people attended which I think is a good turn out for a town of this size," he said.

"With men, in particular, it's a macho thing. They tend not to share their emotions. It's something that isn't spoken about.

"When I got diagnosed 16 months ago I said well something has to change."

Mr Bradley said he was an open person and wasn't afraid to speak about what was happening with his body.

"I understand there are a lot of people out there who aren't comfortable with that either," he said.

"If I can help one person then I've achieved something I've set out to do. It's not just about talking about health. It's just checking in with each other and making sure you're ok.

"The group isn't just for men either. It's for the whole family.

"Cancer can touch everyone. Without support around when you are diagnosed, it makes it hard to cope.

"It is a shock to your system when you get diagnosed with cancer, it scares the living daylights out of you, to be honest."
