Fantasies is an ongoing suite of sculptural works which engages the materiality and embedded memories of these found items to convey both the strangeness of 'being' in a body as well as a curiosity for, and delight in, new sensations.
Fantasies includes The Sleepover, a large-scale suspended sculpture. As described by Michaela Bear on Un Projects' website: "Visitors are invited to retreat into The Sleepover (2018), a ... mass of ascending pastel slip dresses shredded at the waist to form ethereal portals of colour that dissolve into each other when walked through. This act is delightfully sensorial yet unsettling; an intrusive navigation of absent bodies. The garments create spectral shadows across the walls, emphasising their ephemeral state of being."
Gartside often works with items of vintage women's clothing - particularly underwear and sleepwear - to explore female subjectivity.
Ararat Gallery TAMA is open 10am-4pm daily (excluding Sunday 13 October 2019) and entry is free. Find us at 82 Vincent Street, Ararat.
Kids and crafts
Backyard Paradise is a drop-in kids activity and exhibition taking place in Ararat Gallery TAMA's foyer over the next few weeks, and we would love your children to visit and contribute.
Inspired by Kate Just's sculpture, Paradise, we've turned our front cabinet into a backyard.
Children are invited to come to our creating station and make their own artwork to add to this striking landscape.
The cabinet is starting to fill up with some incredible creations and we would love to add your child's piece.
Gallery closure
Due to a planned power outage by Powercor for bushfire mitigation, Ararat Gallery TAMA will be closed on Sunday October 13 for the whole day.
This will also affect Forager's Café located in the gallery building. The gallery will re-open as usual on Monday 14 October at 10am.
