Sergeant Bill Alford, of St Arnaud, said a fight between eight people broke out about 9pm on Wills Street.
At one point the man was wielding a steel pole.
Several people received injuries to the face and head but "no broken bones", Sergeant Alford said.
"He suffered injuries himself as a result of the fighting," Sergeant Alford said.
The man is being charged with affray and a series of assaults and has been remanded in custody until October 3. He was refused bail.
He is due to face the Horsham Magistrates' Court in October.
