"Brigades were paged at 5.33am on Thursday," District 16 commander Wayne Hirth said.
"Ararat, Stawell, Great Western and the unit from Ballarat City.
"There were four occupants in the house and they were all evacuated safely."
Mr Hirth said the house was totally destroyed.
"Fire investigation units are there investigating the possible cause," he said.
"The house was burning for about an hour before an official stop was called.
"It was an older weatherboard home which has been totally destroyed."
EARLIER THURSDAY 8.15am: A house in Ararat's Moore Street was destroyed by a fire this morning.
At about 5.15am, emergency services were called to assist, roads estimated to be blocked for some time.
Ararat Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Caroline Blackley said the cause of the fire was unknown.
"No one has been injured in the fire," she said.
"The house was totally engulfed. It sounds like it went through quite quickly and was a big fire.
"investigations are ongoing and we are appealing for witnesses."
