Injuring his left ankle in the round 14 game against Pimpinio on July 20, Carey hasn't stepped back onto the field since.
The 2017 Dellar Medallist and 2016 club best and fairest said he clearly remembered how the injury occurred.
"I picked up the ball and went to turn strangely onto my right, which I never do," he said.
"I got tackled from the side and the player's tackle slipped down and his body landed on my left ankle.
"At the start of the injury, I thought it was just a rolled ankle and rested for a week.
"It improved and I thought with some more rest it would come right."

In his 13th consecutive season for the Baggies Carey has played an influential role once more in the mid-field structure.
"I missed the game against Taylors Lake, we then had the bye and the game against Harrow-Balmoral," Carey said.
"I attempted running on my ankle before the game against Rupanyup last week and I just knew something wasn't right.
"I went to got my ankle checked out and I've got a high ankle sprain.
"There are three ligaments which hold your fibular and tibia together and I've ruptured two of them and partly torn the other.
"When I run my tibia and fibular move apart."
Carey said there weren't too many weeks this season he wasn't carrying some kind of injury.
"I feel like this season I've just played my role - I haven't stood out or done anything special," he said.
"We have the players who can come in and play the role I was playing.
"I feel like the team can cover me quite comfortably - I don't kick many goals. I'm just a handballer who creates a bit of play for the boys down the field."
Carey received surgery on his ankle on Tuesday.
