Detective Senior Constable Mal Wineberg, of Ararat, said residents arrived home at their Banfield Street address about 4pm Thursday to find a strange man inside their home.
The man was described as about six foot tall, Caucasian, thin to medium build with a crew cut haircut and a bright red hoodie.
He was carrying a black backpack.
The residents said he left the property via a rear exit.
"Police were called to the scene and located a 42-year-old Buangor man nearby fitting the description, who was arrested and charged with burglary," Senior Constable Wineberg said.
"He will appear in the Horsham Magistrate's Court today."
Police are requesting anyone who has seen a male fitting that description in the area surrounding Banfield Street to contact the Ararat Police Station on 5355 1500.
