Ararat and District Aeromodellers Club will host the two-day event and said the public was more than welcome to come along.
"There should be someone flying all the time," club member Rick Pimblott said.
"We've got standard remote control planes which can take off on land with wheels but we take the wheels off and put floats on them. Then there are some that are specifically made for taking off on water."
The planes will also range in size.
"They range from small foam electric planes to large five or six foot wingspans," Mr Pimblott said.
"One of the guys coming from Melbourne has got about a 10-foot wingspan - at least I hope he'll be there.
"The big ones are petrol and have up to around 50cc engines."
The speeds of the craft were difficult to envisage.
"They travel about 150 to 170 miles an hour," Mr Pimblott said.
"They are proper miniature planes."
Mr Pimboltt said operating a plane that takes off and lands on water was quite a different experience to operating one on land.
"You can't go out and just pick up your aircraft - you have to taxi it out and try not to dump it in the water I suppose," he said.
"There are other things like waves and that sort of stuff. It's a bit like driving a boat."
Pilots will be coming from Melbourne, regional Victoria and South Australia to take part.
"There's probably only two events in Victoria like this," Mr Pimblott said.
All of the pilots must be registered with the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia, which provides inspectors to ensure the planes are up to scratch.
"When you get into the 10-foot wingspans and heavier models they've got to be inspected and checked," Mr Pimblott said.
The pilots will kick off around 10am on Saturday and continue through to the end of Sunday at Lake Bolac
