Sally Philip posted a round of 84 to lead A Grade. Reigning champion Rene Hamilton is hot on Philip's heels just one stroke behind with Sharon Powell another stroke back.
The contest between these three consistent players will be one to watch closely over the two rounds to come.
Hamilton claimed the handicap honours over Philip when a count back was needed to separate the pair who both finished with a nett 73.
While many ladies found the pace of the greens hard to handle, Hamilton took the challenge in her stride and won the day's putting award with 28 putts.
In B Grade, Tricia Heard played a sizzling round of 91. Playing off a handicap of 20, her nett score of 71 gave her the win in both the scratch and handicap sections. She will be 5 shots clear of Nola Mahoney at the start of the second round next week.
Ceal Gubbins also took out a scratch-handicap double in C Grade when she returned 103-30-70. This was the best handicapped round of the day. Meri White and Liz de Fegely are close enough to make it a tight tussle for the C championship.
Nearest the pins on the opening day of the championships were taken out by Marg Lardner, Rene Hamilton, Chris Dohnt, Ceal Gubbins and Wendy Brady.
Saturday's golf was won by Sharon Powell on a count back from Marg Brehaut. Both players scored 32 points. Brehaut also took the only nearest the pin award.
Sally Philip was first past the post in Monday's nine hole stableford. The third count back of the week decided the runners up position between Maree Dalgleish and Nola Pugh with Dalgleish getting the nod.
Pugh got some consolation when she won the nearest the pin on the 18th hole. The draw for the second round of the championships will be available at the club. Anyone who wants to be added to the daily competition should contact Captain Gayle Dadswell.
