Following a low scoring affair in day one, where both sides failed to make a total of 100 runs, Buangor-Tatyoon and Youth Club were set for a thrilling day two.
After bowling the Combine out for 68, the Clubbers made the most of their batting powers as they declared on 8-134, with Gary Martin top scoring with 33 runs.
Youth Club captain Nic Baird said the reason they declared was to allow time to chase the win, despite the Combine having eight players.
“I thought we had enough runs on the board, particularly after the way the pitch played last week with scores of 50s and 60s,” he said.
“I thought 120 was more than enough and 45 overs was more than enough time to bowl them out, but credit to Buangor-Tatyoon who dug in and didn’t throw their wickets away.”
Baird said the players adapted to the pitch after low totals were scored from last week.
“I don’t think the wicket changed that much,” he said.
“It was just the batting performance changed and knowing what was needed out there rather than trying to play big back footed shots everyone was getting forward and covering the balls a lot better.”
Buangor-Tatyoon Captain Micheal Harricks said that day two was just about surviving.
“(With nine players) we just had to conserve as much as we could really,” he said.
“We tried to bat out the 40 overs and we got the six points for the first innings lead, with a team of 11 we would have had a crack at the outright win but at the same time they (Youth Club) wouldn’t have declared.”
It was a different case in the Pomonal and Halls Gap clash where Pomonal won outright and on first innings, declaring for 7-101 and then made 3-62 in the second innings, while Halls Gap made 70 in the second innings.
Halls Gap captain Luke Stevens said the second innings was about developing players.
“We got a lot of young and developing players that are really talented but lack a lot of experience and they probably need a bit more development into them,”he said.
In B-Grade, Rhymney-Moyston won on forfeit against Youth Club.
Navarre were bowled for 112 while Chalambar made 2-121.
Swifts-Great Western made 202 and defeated Buangor-Tatyoon as they made 180.
Wickliffe-Lake Bolac made 211 and defeated Halls Gap when they scored 5-133.
Pomonal had the bye.
