Three offenders were attempting to break into the service station on the Sunraysia Highway about 1.20am Saturday when police pulled into the business to purchase fuel and saw them.
The offenders were also travelling in a stolen vehicle.
A 22-year-old male from Corio was apprehended at the scene and charged with attempted burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and other driving offences.
The offender was bailed to appear before the St Arnaud court in March.
St Arnaud Sergeant Bill Alford said the other two offenders fled the scene but they are known to police.
“They haven’t been located at this time,” he said.
“It was a really good piece of work by the police officers.”
