A highlight this year will be the long-awaited return of woodchopping to the show, with a demonstration by the Wimmera Axemen’s Association.
Other new attractions at the show will include children’s entertainer Waldo the Magician, live music from African percussion group Super Mande Percussion, and the Carisbrook Lions Club train for the little ones.
Following last year’s successful debut, Stawell Performing Arts Company will again operate a Walk Up Stage Open Mic event.
This will offer local talent the opportunity to perform in front of a live and appreciative crowd.
Other popular attractions include the Halls Gap Zoo interactive exhibit, Barn Buddies Petting Farm, Grampians Laser Challenge games, mechanical bull rides, Irene’s cartoon portraits, and a Findlay Fairground Organ.
Traditional attractions to return to the show this weekend include the horse show, hall classes, photography section, lucky gate prizes, sheaf tossing, ferret racing, schools displays, tiny tots and show girls, beaut ute, car and motorbike competition, highland dancing, animal nursery and miniature goat show.
Gates open at 9am and close at 5pm.
St Arnaud Cup 2018 field impressive
THE St Arnaud Turf Club hosts the St Arnaud Cup on Cox Plate Day annually and it is an increasingly popular community event for the township.
Stawell horse trainer Dane Smith is looking to claim his second major win in as many weeks at Saturday’s St Arnaud Cup.
Smith won the Avoca Cup with Finn Mccool at the weekend.
But the galloper will have to beat Manhattan Menage, hoping for back-to-back wins after taking out the 2017 St Arnaud Cup by a little more than a length.
Racegoers attending Saturday’s meet will be able to keep up to date with the Cox Plate, with the Melbourne race running on the big screen at the St Arnaud track.
Jazz, Blues festival returns
THE Halls Gap Jazz Blues Festival is back with musical performances in the backdrop of the Grampians.
Smaller than previous festivals, the Halls Gap Jazz Blues Festival will bring together a range of jazz, blues, American songbook, swing, funk and classic tunes to stir your soul and get your feet tapping.
The festival is a family friendly event, with children welcome to attend many of scheduled performances. There will be something for every music lover, with a variety of musical styles and performances.
The festival has moved from February to October, which makes for cooler spring weather with wildflowers and a beautiful green backdrop of the Grampians National Park.
A taste of all things German
RESIDENTS can experience a taste of Oktoberfest at Pomonal Estate on Saturday, October 27.
A celebration of “everything German” including beer and food.
German sausages, homemade sour kraut, handcrafted beer, cider and live music from two local bands and some of the things patrons can expect on the day.
A best-dressed competition will be hosted with the venue asking patrons to dress in “your Lederhosen”.
