Plastic inside a wheelie bin was set alight in front of the old grandstand at Central Park in Stawell on Monday night, being extinguished by a local business owner before the CFA arrived.
“This is especially reckless heading into fire season,” CFA district 16 operations officer Malcolm Bruce said.
“If there is a fire it should be reported to triple zero and if anyone sees anything suspicious they should report it to the police.”
It is the second similar incident this week, with a bin also on fire in Cato Park on Sunday evening.
“I imagine they are related and have something to do with the school holidays beginning,” Stawell Sergeant Sandra Marriner said.
Sergeant Marriner said the acts are “senseless” and cause nothing but danger.
“It is extremely dangerous to be setting fire to bins on fire,” she said.
“Offenders can cause serious injury to themselves or seriously damage adjoining properties.
“In Monday night's case it could have been the historic grand stand that was affected. It might not mean much to the people lighting the fires but that building is of great significance to the people of the town.”
School holidays began this week and will run until for the next two weeks, with school resuming on October 8.
Sergeant Marriner said police will be keeping a close eye out ensuring the incidents are not repeated.
“We will be patrolling heavily around the area,” she said.
“If you are a youth walking around late at night expect to be talked to by the police.”
