We focus strongly on supporting young people by providing:
- Scholarships to every school in Ararat Rural City.
- Sending two year 10 students to Rotary’s ‘Defying the Drift’ project - a residential weekend at Longerenong College where students visit a variety of farms and agribusinesses to learn about career options.
- Three students from Marian College attended Rotary’s National Youth Science Forum in January – two to ANU Canberra and one to UQ Brisbane. They met scientists doing amazing work and mixed with other young people interested in STEM careers.
- We’ve worked with VCAL students from Ararat College tree planting at Green Hill Lake and donated some equipment for their farm project.
- Our club sponsored Alyssa Heard, apprentice chef at Chalambar Golf Club, to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp at Cooriemungle. The camp gives young adults 18-25 the opportunity to focus on their goals and the skills to overcome challenges as they move into their careers.
We work in partnership with other organisations such as the Ararat Suicide Prevention Network where we hosted a barbecue for R U OK Day.
Rotary is an international organisation and we raise funds for a number of Rotary’s international projects including Polio Plus to rid the world of polio; Shelter Box and Aqua Box to provide shelter and water for communities struck by disaster and Australian Rotary Health, which funds projects such as Hats off for Mental Health, Operation Cleft and Interplast.
We’ve just started a ‘Days for Girls’ project, with our female Rotarians working with Ararat women to make reusable sanitary packs for girls in developing countries. The packs enable girls to attend school full-time and gain an education. We are sending 40 packs to Timor Leste when two of our members visit this week. We work hard to raise money for our projects holding lots of barbecues, catering and staffing the gate for Ararat Football Club and much more.
We may be small (with 17 members – a mixture of young and old, and a good gender balance) but we have lots of fun. We’d always love more members who can contribute some energy. Our members commit the time they have available and help when they can. If you’re interested in finding out more about Rotary, contact the president Bo Munro on bellshill@bigpond.com.
