The ‘Walk for Water’ charity walk was organised through The Olive Branch Church in Ararat.
Organiser Heidi Gellert said the money raised through the charity walk would go towards providing water, medical facilities, shelter and clothing for persecuted Christians.
“When it comes to water, I am use to hearing that people are walking between four and 10 kilometres for water – and it’s dirty water,” she said.
“The persecution is getting so bad that the charity can’t tell us where the money goes.
“There are so many countries where people are being persecuted because of their religious beliefs.”
Ms Gellert said the church was inviting the entire community to participate in the charity walks on Saturday at Alexandra Gardens Park.
“There will be two walks – a 10.8 kilometre walk starting at 10am and a shorter 5.6 kilometre walk at 11am,” she said. “The more walkers the better. We hope to raise a benchmark of $2000.”
