Pubs across the region have hosted various fundraisers to raise money and awareness for farmers in Queensland and New South Wales in drought.
The Great Western Hotel ran a “Keg for a Cause” Sunday session, where patrons paid what they wanted for their pots of beer, with every cent donated to farmers.
Great Western Hotel publican Danial Ahchow said the results had been fantastic and the pub would continue to raise money until the end of the year.
“We are ecstatic with our result. We will keep the Parma for a Farmer on the menu for the rest of the year, so there is still plenty of time to show your support to struggling farmers,” he said.
The Gift Hotel in Stawell is also extending its fundraising efforts until the end of the year.
The Gift Hotel owner Peta Duns said she was overwhelmed with the response from the community.
“We offer discounted parmas for football clubs on training nights. Since starting the campaign, the clubs wanted to pay full price with the difference going to the fundraiser,” Mrs Duns said.
Mrs Duns said she was yet to count the total of donations, but expected a large donation would go to the campaign by the end of the year.
“We will be holding a meat raffle every Friday night until the end of the year. That’s when I will be totalling all of our donations,” she said.
James Berriman of the Farmer's Arms Hotel in St Arnaud said the support not only for the Parma for a Farmer campaign, but donations in general, had been fantastic.
“Even if people weren’t buying parmas, they were supporting through our donation jar,” he said.
Mr Berriman said the pub had visitors from NSW buying feed for cattle in the local area.
“When you see and hear their stories, it really hits home. It makes you aware and inspired to dig deep and give back as much as we can,” he said.
