AN EXHITIBION of Australian rules-themed artwork at Willaura is hoped to attract new people to the art world during September.

The collection of more than 30 pieces has been curated by Bob Ubter by combining his twin passions of football and art to create ‘The art of football’.
Project manager Louis Reynolds said Mr Utber had collected a number of similarly themed pieces from different artists for exhibitions in Melbourne, Mildura and Colac.
“At the moment he has an exhibition in Mildura and we’ll have one at the same time in Willaura,” she said.
“I’ve worked with Bob on the exhibition and we decided it would be a great idea to run it during September to coincide with finals in the district as well as leading into the AFL grand final.
“I’m hoping that it might appeal to people that might not normally come into an art gallery – football followers will see some of their football icons and they’ll see themselves up there because a lot are about supporters.
“I think what we have is a really interesting eclectic mix.”
Mr Ubter will talk about the exhibition at a special opening on September 14 while Mininera and District league chairperson will officially open the exhibition on Friday evening.
Ms Reynolds said the exhibition would add flavour to the district.
“When you combine two things that people are passionate about it can lead to something very exciting,” she said.
“Football doesn’t only have to take place out on an oval, people are so passionate about it is also displayed in the artwork of these football tragics.”
Included in the exhibition will be several works by Anne McMaster who previously to exhibited a series at the Ararat Art Gallery relating to Tom Wills and Moyston’s history of football.
“We’ve got two pieces from that exhibition on display that have come from a private collections,” Ms Reynolds said.
“We also have another one of her more recent works which is for sale. You can really see the influence of football on her work and she’s now actually up in the Tiwi Islands where the sport continues to influence her.”
The exhibition is hosted by Willaura Modern and will be open each Friday during the month from 1-3pm.
The gallery will open to visitors on September 8 and 29 from 10am to 2pm to coincide with Mininera and District league finals at Willaura and the AFL grand final.
