The aim is to care, offer guidance and encouragement to the families of servicemen and servicewomen who have died.
Ararat Legacy includes 30 Legatees from the areas of Ararat, Avoca, Beaufort, Stawell and Willaura, looking after 130 war widows.
Legacy supports Stawell Laurel Club – a group of women who meet once a month.
One of the long-serving members of the group is Joyce Dowsett, who was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the club for 40 years.
Ms Dowsett said Legacy had been a great support for the women over the years.
“(Legacy) has looked after us well. It’s important for support and companionship,” she said.
Legacy week is next week and is Legacy’s major fundraising event of the year.
Legatee Rosemary Perry said the money raised would go towards supporting women such as Ms Dowsett with living expenses and gifts at Christmas time.
“This year we have supported ladies, who are still in their own homes, with increasing power bills,” she said.
Representatives from Legacy will be out in force selling their iconic badges throughout towns in the region.
