Both sides put on an entertaining game, with a high-scoring first quarter setting the tone early.
The Swifts kicked four goals to the Kees’ three before Kalkee worked its way on top in the second term.
Kalkee kept the Swifts goalless in the second term, kicking three more of its own to hold a 14-point lead at the half.
The Swifts fought back in the final term and were able to close the gap to just 10 points. From there, Kalkee ran out the game better and wrestled its way back on top to run out winners 11.9 (75) to 9.5 (59).
Kalkee reserves coach Simon Adams said persistence allowed his side to get on top and win the game.
“I think we were better than sixth position during the season but we wasted too many opportunities,” he said.
“We knew if we had that run and carry we could match it with the Swifts.
“We just persisted and made it a contest. Brendan McDonald and Adam Schache both played well and young Jack Brennan did well in the back-line. It’s do-or-die every week so we will just keep going in every week with self belief if we keep attacking the ball.”
Schache, Adam Atwood and Colby Ledgar all kicked two majors for the Kees, while Paul Carson and Alex Close kicked two goals apiece for the Swifts.
