Legacy Awards | Young, passionate voices

Ararat Legacy hosted a regional final of the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Awards last Friday, August 3 at the Astor Cinema, Ararat.

Master of Ceremonies, Melbourne Legatee Gordon Archer opened proceedings and welcomed 10 participating students from Ararat, Marian, Stawell and Beaufort colleges.

All in attendance, teachers, parents and observing students were treated to something special with all contestants speaking with passion and conviction on their chosen topics.

Judges Robyn Clelland, Lee Albert and David Tyler were hard pressed to select a winner at the conclusion of both the prepared speeches and impromptu round.

However, following the decision, Chief Judge Robyn Clelland announced James Mullin from Ararat College as the winner with Jaelyn Brand from Beaufort Secondary College runner-up.

We are continually amazed by the confidence and capability of our youth and we are privileged to be able to host the annual public speaking awards that foster their development.

James spoke about ‘Adam Goodes – An Inspiration’ while Jaelyn’s theme was the ‘Australian Spirit’.

James will now represent Ararat Legacy at the Preliminary Final to be held in Bendigo on Tuesday, September 18 and if successful, will then have the opportunity to go on to the Victorian final in late October.

In presenting the award to the winner along with certificates to all participating students, Ararat Legacy President, Steve Shannon was full of praise.

“We are continually amazed by the confidence and capability of our youth and we are privileged to be able to host the annual public speaking awards that foster their development,” he said.

“We congratulate all the students involved and commend our secondary colleges for continuing to support this activity.

“Ararat Legacy Club is most grateful for the ongoing funding support from the Victoria Government Veterans Council Grants Program and the Ararat RSL Sub Branch which enables our club to conduct an Ararat regional final of the Junior Public Speaking Awards.”
