The plan is to paint the line of bikes along the fence of Memorial Park in Great Western, near the entrance sign, white and to tie them to the fence. 

Great Western Future Committee member Bruce Ahchow said the idea for the bikes in Great Western along the fence began about two years ago. 

“The idea started when the Western Highway duplication was announced,” he said.

He said having bikes along the fence line near the entrance sign was thought of a way to try and bring more tourists to the town. 

“It’s been on the agenda at the committee for a while now,” he said. “The bikes currently there were from a committee member.

“One of their friends were giving away bikes and they took them for the fence. 

“But they didn’t want the bikes in their backyard anymore, so they placed them in front of the fence.

“It’s unfinished business and we will tidy up the bikes along the fence. We’re hoping to have the bikes painted white and tied to the fence by spring.” 

Mr Ahchow said the committee got the idea from cafe, Salingers.

Salingers owner Sandy Friend said her husband Rob Martin came up with the idea for the bikes about three years ago.

“He painted two bikes white and we decorated them with flowers and fruit,” she said. 

“We now have six to eight bikes that we move around depending on the weather.”

Great Western resident and artist Meryl Bowers decorates the bikes on behalf of the cafe.

“She engages people with her creativity,” Ms Friend said. 

Ms Friend said the bikes were a way to advertise the cafe in a way that suited the cafe more. 

“Three other cafes in the region now have similar looking bikes,” she said.

“It’s nice to see other places doing it too.”
