Ararat Police Detective Senior Constable Caroline Blackley said a slide at the playground in Carey Street was set alight about 7pm.
“The slide was completely destroyed,” Detective Senior Constable Blackley said.
“The platform joining the slide also had burn damages, but was not destroyed.”
Detective Senior Constable Blackley said police were treating the fire as suspicious.
“An accelerant was used,” she said.
An accelerant is any substance or mixture that accelerates or speeds the development and escalation of fire.
“The slide will need to be replaced in the playground,” Detective Senior Constable Blackley said.
“We don’t have an estimated cost for the damage done, yet.”
Detective Senior Constable Blackley said people in the area reported seeing two children running from the playground around the time of the incident.
Police urge anyone with information to contact Ararat Police 5355 1500 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
