Northern Grampians Shire Councillors approved a permit for the Grampians Peaks Trail at a council meeting on Monday.

The trail, funded by the state and federal governments, will create single and multi day hiking trails along the north-south length of the Grampians National Park.
The Grampians Peaks Trail includes the development of a 158.3km trail, trailheads, car parking and 12 hiker camps consisting of camping platforms, shelters and toilets between Mt Zero, Halls Gap, Mt William and Dunkeld.
A planning permit was approved by the NGSC for the buildings and works associated with the use of land for camping, caravan parks and informal outdoor recreation associated with the Grampians Peaks Trail was approved by the NGSC.
The trail extends through 48km of the Northern Grampians shire, 46km of Ararat Rural City and 7.2km of the Southern Grampians Shire.
The trail is subject to the individual planning schemes of each municipality.
Ararat Rural City Council has approved a planning permit for the trail.
Prior to approving a permit for the Grampians Peaks Trail, Northern Grampians Shire Council bushfire planning person Kevin Hazell undertook a planning assessment.
Mr Hazell liaised with Parks Victoria and other agencies for the assessment.
NGSC mayor Tony Driscoll said the assessment was a massive document.
“It was crucial to the success of the ongoing development of the trail,” he said.
“The Grampians Peaks Trail is a significant piece of infrastructure.
“Tourism is important to our region and the Grampians Peaks Trail is expected to generate over 34,000 walkers using the trail by 2025.
“The permit approval allows the work to commence and helps to ensure that visitors will enjoy an experience of a lifetime.”
