Stawells Tim Coffey eyes off sixth Wimmera championship

Stawell golfer Tim Coffey will be looking to continue his domination of the region when the 2018 Wimmera and District Golf Association championships are held this weekend.

Taking place at Nhill this year, the mens and ladies championships will be played over 36 holes on Saturday.

The junior championship is on Sunday.

Coffey has taken home the last five Wimmera championships (including sand scrapes) and is hoping to bring home a sixth on Saturday.

I am hoping for a good day of golf. Hopefully the weather is kind to us, he said.

COFFEY TIMELINE (UPDATED)

Coffey is not unfamiliar with Nhill, having won his third championship at the course. He said he always enjoys making the trip up there.

It is a ripper course I would describe it as a hidden gem, he said.

I know the green keepers up there do terrific work so I am looking forward to heading back there.

WDGA president John Lacey said the course at Nhill is in good condition for the regions top golfing event of the year.

A bit of rain in the last week has really helped. The course is looking good right now, he said.

We are expecting about 60 competitors to take to the course. There will be plenty of great golfers out there.

The Wimmeras mens and ladies country week sides will be picked from the best performing golfers at this weekends championships.

Despite Coffeys recent dominance, Lacey said he thinks it will be a tight contest this weekend.

Tim (Coffey) has been fantastic and I expect him to be so again, but there are guys like Jordy Briggs, young Mick Thompson, Adam Tribe and of course a few Nhill locals who will have a crack, he said.

Tribe is one that may test Coffey, having hit some good form recently.

He claimed Horsham Golf Clubs championship last week after being crowned champion at Chalambar not long before that.

The championships will tee off at 7am at Nhill on Saturday.
