The four crash victims, Dianne Barr, from Heywood, Tess Ely and Elaine Middleton, from Hamilton, and Claudia Jackson from Portland were returning home from a day of dancing at St Arnaud when the car they were travelling in collided with another at the intersection of Bains Road and Ararat-St Arnaud Road about 6pm.
The other vehicle involved was being driven by a 64-year-old woman from Stawell who suffered minor injuries but was released from hospital a few days later.
A police spokesperson said the investigation was ongoing and at this stage there had been no charges laid.
The spokesperson said police would not give a timeframe on how long the investigation could take.
