NGSC mayor Tony Driscoll said “as the elected representatives of the community, it would be irresponsible for council to adopt any other position.”
“Throughout this process, we have maintained that our judgment would be guided by the voice of our community, and what we have heard, almost overwhelmingly, is that our community does not want to see this trial take place on our roads.”
Eighty per cent of Northern Grampians Shire roads, along with 1000 kilometres of Parks Victoria’s NGS roads, are gravel.
Over the past five years 41 people were seriously injured on a gravel road in the Northern Grampians Shire.
To address these statistics, Victoria Police proposed to change the speed limit on gravel roads to 70 kilometres per hour.
During the consultation period with the community Victoria Police and the NGSC held a community forum.
Victoria Police Superintendent Paul Margetts said the forum assisted police to “understand what the change might mean to people.”
The speed limit for gravel roads in the NGS is 100kmh.
Cr Driscoll said while Council would not formally endorse the proposed trial, it would support other means of increasing road safety.
“We are happy to continue to work closely with Victoria Police and other State Government entities in order to decrease the rate of injuries and deaths on our roads, and we are open to any discussions or approaches around how we achieve those goals.”
