The assembly has set up a website (https://engage.vic.gov.au/wimmera-southern-mallee) as an avenue for residents in the region to have their say on four topics that have been chosen by the assembly.
This year’s assemblies four key topics are:
- regional planning, including planning for roads and freight logistics, public transport, water and natural resources, population, and future skills.
- Coordinated service delivery, including in the areas of health, education, and social and community services.
- Education, including schools and post-secondary;
- energy including renewables and security.
These topics were chosen based on 2016 and 2017’s regional assemblies.
Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Partnership Chair David Jochinke said he looks forward to hearing the community’s views on what's important for the future of our region.
Regional Assemblies began in 2016 as a way for the state government to directly engage with regional communities.
“The Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Partnership is dedicated to ensuring our region and its communities grow and thrive into the future,” Mr Jochinke said.
The Wimmera Southern Mallee assembly is one of nine regional assemblies held in Victoria.
Mr Jochinke said “the 2018 Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Assembly will be an opportunity to further explore key priorities which the Partnership process has identified for our region”.
Over 200 people attended last year’s Wimmera Southern Mallee Regional Assembly.
In last year’s state budget, several parts came from the regional assemblies.
This included $500,000 to develop a tourism plan for the Wimmera Southern Mallee region and $45 million towards improving digital technology and infrastructure across regional Victoria through the Connecting Regional Communities Program.
Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford said “regional partnerships are about listening and delivering for your community”.
