The Lions booted 12 third quarter goals to record a 19.17 (131) to 9.8 (62) victory.
2017 best and fairest winner Sam Cocks led the way for Great Western, booting nine goals to finish as the best on ground.
Great Western coach Will Bell said the win was “momentous” for the club.

“To get a win is exactly what we went down there for,” he said.
“It was great to have our boys walk off the field with their heads held high and to reward the supporters with four points.”
The Lions struggled to break clear in the first half, with the wet conditions playing havoc.
Bell said he was pleased to see his team slog it out for the whole match.
“The game was the first real time we have played together as a group,” he said.
“After half time everything seemed to click.
“Our new recruits drove our structures really hard and led from the front but we could not have gotten the result without a whole team effort.”
Great Western head into the second round on top of the ladder, a position Bell said is “a little strange”.
“Being on top is great, now we have to focus on trying to keep our spot right up near the top,” he said.
It was a great day for all of Great Western’s football teams, with each side recording victories to kick start the season.
