Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced a $2.2 million package for upgrading critical cooling and heating systems during a tour of Stawell Regional Health on Friday.

Ms Hennessy said the funding would equip Stawell Hospital with the latest cooling and air handling systems.

“We’re replacing the outdated chillers and hot water systems throughout the hospital, and fitting acute wards and operating theatres with new air handling systems,” she said.

Mr Andrews said the latest hospital infrastructure will mean Stawell Regional Health can perform more surgeries and reduce cancellations – and improve working conditions for hard-working hospital staff.

“We’re taking action to fit Stawell Regional Health with the latest, cutting edge infrastructure that will allow hard-working hospital staff to treat more patients sooner, and closer to their homes,” he said.

The funding will cover the purchase of an additional chiller and replacement of aged infrastructure including air handling units and domestic hot water boilers. 

The funding will also support the upgrade of electrical distribution boards.

“In a climate that is experiencing longer periods of high heat and humidity these significant projects will make a big difference to the environment for patients and staff,” Stawell Regional Health acting chief executive Libby Fifis said.

The funding was provided through the state government’s  $200 million Regional Health Infrastructure Fund for regional and rural hospitals.
