Sergeant Bill Alford said police were investigating the aggravated cruelty of several kangaroos that had been hit at Lord Nelson Park.
“This has occurred near the grandstand area, where a person or persons have hit the kangaroos in a car and then reversed over them, leaving what could be wheelie marks in the area,” he said.
“At the moment we’ve had four kangaroos that have been hit and killed in that manner.
“It appears it has happened late on nights during the week.”
Sergeant Alford said the town’s police members had never seen anything like it in St Arnaud.
“We're seeking any and all support from the public to try to find the person or persons who did this,” he said.
“It is not a good outcome for the town, the football club or the people who have found these dead animals.”
Sergeant Alford asked anyone with information to call St Arnaud Police Station on 5495 1000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
