The award comes as the Stawell Secondary College student continues to impress with his performances on the running track.
Walker said it was not a surprise when he found out about being nominated for the award.
“A couple of my PE teachers found the award and decided to nominate me,” he said.
“I think they were going to keep it a secret at first but then they need some details, so eventually I found out about it.”
The award ceremony will be hosted at the MCG on March 15 with the stadium having a long history of sporting achievements, Walker said he looks forward to attending the event.
“Some of the teachers are really excited that a student from here has made there,” he said.
“It is great to get some recognition for all the work I have put in to get where I am.
“To come from a country town makes it more special, some of the metro athletes get recognised a lot more often and a lot easier than people from the country.”
Walker will be joined by his parents for the ceremony, to be held in the MCC Members dining room.
“My parents are also excited to go down and see how it unfolds during the day,” he said.
Walker has been training multiple times a week with a recent increase to the 5km events forcing some minor changes to his schedule and program.
Walker said the increase in distance means he is doing more running during the week but he is happy with where he is at currently.
“Yeah, the body has adapted pretty well so far,” he said.
“I am just doing a bit more mileage each week but it’s been going well so far.”
Walker continues to train hard with the Stawell Gift less than two months away.
He will be hoping to defend his 1600m backmarkers title which he won in 2017.
His other events are still yet to be confirmed but it is set to be another big year for the Stawell athlete.
