A B-double truck carrying 45,000 litres of diesel fuel rolled over at Deep Lead, causing emergency services to shut the Western Highway in both directions.

District 16 CFA operations officer Neville Collins said a “considerable amount” of diesel spilled onto the road as a result of the incident.

“The diesel has travelled approximately 500-700m down the Western Freeway and crews are working hard to contain to leak,” he said.

“HAZMAT vehicles from Corio and Ballarat City will be attending the scene this morning.

“Crews have done a fantastic job this morning and are expected to be on scene for an extended period of time today for monitoring.”

The driver of the truck was uninjured, but was transported to hospital by Ambulance Victoria for observation.

Police are in attendance and the Environmental Protection Authority is making their way to the scene.

Up to 11 CFA vehicles from Stawell, Halls Gap, Glenorchy, Dadswells Bridge, Ararat, Corio and Ballarat City are in attendance.

VicRoads and emergency services are on site working to clear the scene as quickly as possible.

Specialty hazmat trucks have also been spotted attending the scene.

VicRoads advised motorists to detour via Donald-Stawell Rd, Wimmera Hwy and the Henty Hwy between Stawell and Horsham.

The Western Highway could be closed for most of the day in both directions after a B-double crashed near the Deep lead Road exit.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 8am on Tuesday morning.

The CFA Emergency App listed the incident as a road accident and also showed warnings for hazardous material in the area.

A police officer directing traffic through a detour warned motorists driving to Horsham from Stawell that the delay would add ten minutes to their journey.

Drivers should take care when travelling through the area.

More to come.
