Members of the Stawell Quilters group were invited to enter their pieces at the Quilt Showcase Melbourne to go up against some of the best in the state in July.
Lesley Bennett, Helen Searle and Lyn Keller all came away from the event with winning ribbons.
Founding member of the group Lesley Bennett is still as enthusiastic about quilting as she was 30 years ago when she helped get it going.
The 91-year-old designed and created her quilt named ‘Habitat- under the gums’.
Mrs Bennett received a highly commended award for the arts section at the show.
Helen Searle won a highly commended award in the innovative section for her quilt named ‘Thirty years on, thank you Megan’.
Mrs Searle is also a founding member of the quilting club.
Lyn Keller won two awards at the Quilt Showcase for her design which is 20 years in the making.
Mrs Keller joined a class taught by Fran Anyon called ‘Grandmothers fan with embellishments’ when she first moved to Stawell to meet other quilters.
Mrs Keller’s quilt is made up of squares, each representing members of her family.
The quilt displays memories and tributes to each member with their names and added motifs, charms etc that relate to their lives.
The quilt when laid out measures 180cm x 180cm and will be kept as a family heirloom.
She received the Gloria Flood Award for presidents choice and also a highly commended in the mainly applique amateur section.
For 30 years women from all over the district have been coming together to work on their individual projects and items for charity.
Blankets for many charities and hospitals have been made over the years by the group, and still are distributed today.
The club currently has 62 members.
The group welcomes new members, of any age and skill level. For anyone interested in finding out more information or wanted to join the group they are encouraged to contact Pauline Holden on 5358 2130.
