THE final Wimmera Regional Tennis junior points tournament of the 2016-2017 season went off without a hitch on Sunday at Stawell.
Organiser Murray Hart said despite entries having come in slowly in the week leading in, it was the biggest of the season.
“We were a bit concerned early on but then all the entries came in late,” he said.
“We’re a bit different to the other tournaments in that we leave entries open a bit longer and do the draw the night before.”
In the end there was 87 entries in the tournament, a number Hart said was 12 or 14 up on when Stawell held the tournament last season.
“It was really great to see so many juniors down there on the courts,” he said.
“Winners on the day were shared out among players from different clubs.
“There was also plenty of parents supporting their children around the courts which is something that has maybe been missing in the past, so that was good as well.”
At the end of the tournament aggregate medals were also handed out to those that had regular success during season’s four tournaments at Horsham Lawn, Haven, Central Park and Stawell.
Wimmera Regional Tennis coordinator Marita Punchard said she was happy with how the season had gone.
“Overall the season went reasonably well,” she said.
“The number of juniors playing always fluctuates a little bit from season to season.”
For Stawell the tournament on its home court is always a good one.
With increased numbers Stawell took home several trophies and came close in almost every division.
Crystal Summers dominated the under 16 girls division taking out the singles and doubles titles.
Joining with Dakota Cosson in the doubles the win was never in doubt.
Aiden Graveson and Paul Summers took home the runners up medal while Ben McInnes and Ben Hartwich took the top prize.
In the under 12 girls Molly Orr and Holly Graveson booked their place in the final but fell short.
In the under 10s it was an all Stawell final with Dartagnan Walls and Theo Browne defeating Lewis Reading and Luke Monaghan.
Walls and Browne are now the under 10 doubles champions of the Wimmera following the four tournaments this season.
Stawell’s Club junior doubles start this Friday.
