In the Stawell Yacht Club’s first Pennant Race since the Christmas break, club sailors were keen to be back on the water.
Conditions were perfect with a nice breeze from the north-west under a threatening sky.
Ross Bennett was the first over the narrow start line as the flag dropped and horn sounded.
Half a boat length behind was Johno Knight and Mark Knights.
As the several competitors headed up to the first windward mark, it was clear that the fleet had split into two groups.
Knight and Bennett gained a clear lead over the rest of the fleet.
There was plenty of speed for those that could get their bow out of the water and plane.
Impulse design dinghy’s sailed by most club members being well known for this attribute.
After 40 minutes of sailing and a total of eight legs of the triangle course.
Knight had managed to maintain a slender lead over Ross, crossing the finish line 11 seconds ahead. Jan Ibs von Seht finished third.
