Horwood claims match rifle championship

STAWELL - Lew Horwood shot his way to glory once again by taking out the 2012 South Australian Match Rifle Open Class Championships.

Competing at the Lower Light Range 50 kilometres west of Adelaide, Horwood managed to win the event for the second time with a score of 477.39 out of 500.

Horwood said he was 'very confident of a win' after coming so close last year.

In 2011, he shot the 1200-yard event and fired a bullseye in his first three shots.

The target was checked and in a stroke of bad luck for Horwood, judges couldn't find the third hole as the bullet had gone through exactly the same target as the previous shot, costing Horwood five points and the target.

This eventually meant Horwood missed out on winning the overall event by two points.

He wasn't going to let the trophy slip through his fingers again this year.

"I made sure I got it this year," Horwood said.

A member of the Stawell Rifle Club's bigbore arm, Horwood finished 11 points ahead of his nearest rival which is a fantastic achievement.

Both shooters joined the Stawell Rifle Club as it is one of few places that shoots over 1200 yards.

Most of the shooters that contest the South Australian Championships are from the Australian Match Rifle team that have recently returned from Bisley in England and Scotland.

Horwood was a part of the Bisley squad, who were unsuccessful against Great Britain, however the Australians were successful against Scotland on the Blair Atholl Range.

Shooters also participated at an individual match event at Cambridge University.

Next year, a Scottish team will be visiting Stawell to contest a match rifle competition.

This will be the fourth time an international team has visited Stawell, with the last Scottish contingent visiting in 2010.

The next competition for Stawell shooters will be the Victorian Match Rifle Championships held at Corryong on November 3-4.

Also, anyone interested in long range shooting are welcome to visit the Stawell Rifle Range.
