Carey was appointed late last year after being made several offers to leave the club.
The club and their committee were pleased with their appointment and Carey is taking each challenge in his stride.
So far the Swifts have had good numbers on the track for their pre season and while they are still waiting on some experienced recruits the young blood is shining through.
Carey said since taking over the role as head coach from Paul Hanns he has remained comfortable on the tracking track but lacked knowledge of what is expected to coach as such a high level.
“It is all good experience,” Carey said.
“I am just trying to work my way into it. I am as comfortable as ever on the training track, but I am still working out the hidden parts of this coaching role.”
Much like Carey, Sean Mantell is also in a new role as he steps into the assisant coach position.
Mantell has been a prolific ball winner in the middle of the ground for the past two season and the new role will surely see him grow again this season.
Carey was full of praise for the youngster and the leadership he had shown in the early stages of the new season.
“He has a lot more voice at training than he ever has which has been really impressive,” Carey said.
“An assistant coach needs to speak up if they see something I don’t and he has done that.”
While Swifts only trained for a short period of time before the Christmas break both Carey and Mantell have tried to implement new things.
While respecting the work Hanns did in his time at the club they have not removed everything that was in place.
“We have a different approach because we are trying to give it a new lease and keep everyone enthused,” Carey said.
Swifts still have some work to do on their playing list when they return to training on January 18.
