On a day where the Martin name was highlighted with the Ray Martin Memorial, Owen was happy to take the back seat and just watch the day unfold.
However, it wasn't long before the family was celebrating a win of its own, with Usage streeting his rivals in the event.
The form on paper suggested Usage wasn't much of a chance, but that was soon proven wrong.
"His form on paper is pretty poor," Martin said.
"In recent starts he has been against strong opposition. We knew a win wasn't too far away."
With son-in-law Michael Sullivan in the sulky it was a good all round result for the family.
"It was a pretty good drive by Michael. He had a good position early and didn't push too hard," Martin said.
Usage was outside the leader at the bell before kicking into gear down the home straight, winning by nine metres.
Ferocious Son ran home well to finish second, ahead of third placed Village Safari.
With the harness season almost over Martin will send Usage back to the paddock in the hope of bigger and better things to come next season.
"Its probably time to send him back to the paddock," Martin said.
"He will be a much better horse next season."
