Stawell RSL will host its 107th Remembrance Day Service on November 11, with residents invited to attend the annual commemoration and honour those who have lost their lives in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

The service will be held at the Patrick Street Avenue of Honour Cenotaph, adjacent to the Stawell Library, commencing at 11am.

Remembrance Day is observed each year on November 11, marking the anniversary of the Armistice which brought an end to fighting with Germany during World War I in 1918.

The guns fell silent at 11am on November 11, bringing an end to more than four years of devastating conflict and providing a moment that would become one of the most significant dates on the commemorative calendar.

Since 1919, Australians and people across many nations have gathered each year to remember those who served and died in military service.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, communities pause for one minute of silence in memory of the fallen.

While Remembrance Day originated in the aftermath of World War I, its significance has grown to encompass all Australian service personnel who have lost their lives in subsequent wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

It is also an opportunity to recognise the courage, sacrifice and dedication of those who served, and to acknowledge the lasting impact of war on families, communities and generations.

For Stawell, the annual service provides an important opportunity to remember local servicemen and women, reflect on their contribution and ensure their stories and sacrifices are not forgotten.

Proceedings will commence at 11am next Wednesday, with those attending asked to arrive at least 10 minutes beforehand.

Anyone wishing to lay a wreath during the service is asked to contact the Stawell RSL office on 5358 3588. If the office is unattended, callers are asked to leave a message on the answering machine.
