The Stawell Bowling Club has capped off a successful summer season on the green with some new silverware for the trophy cabinet.

The club claimed the Grampians Playing Area’s Weekend Pennant Division Two championship, beating Aradale Bowls Club in the grand final on Saturday, March 2.

The victory was made all the more sweeter for Stawell’s Trevor Skurrie and his step-grandson Louis Martin, who played together in the title winning game.

“We've been runners up for the previous three years,” said Skurrie.

“It was good this year because we'd picked up a few players and a couple of young ones, [it was a] good team effort. So I was real happy with it.”

Skurrie and Martin have been bowling together for a few years, and Skurrie has been able to watch his step-grandson’s game improve.

“He's improving all the time,” Skurrie said.

“He used to be a leader in division one … and we decided to give him a go in division two as a skipper.

“He's only young, and he likes the challenge, the challenge as a skipper is more good for him than probably leading.

“He has turned into a very good Skipper.”

Playing alongside Brenton Russell and Andrew Elliot, Skurrie and Martin won their rink 30 shots to 22.

Stawell’s Mark Galdes, Glenda Cameron, Robert Nicholson and William Skurrie were also victors in their rink, 24 shots to 16.

Aradale’s Trevor Cleary, Brian Stanley Richards, Luke Foster and Brian Richards claimed their rink to avoid a grand final sweep.
