Reverse Advent Calendar supports local families
THE Reverse Advent Calendar initiative is returning for another year, with Zest Living’s Sarah Hamilton hoping residents across Ararat and Stawell will once again come together to support community members doing it tough. Boxes for the project can be picked up from Stawell Toyota and Zest Living in Ararat, allowing locals to fill a box with essential items throughout December.
Sarah said the community spirit behind the project remains its driving force. Inspiring the feeling that someone else in the community cares.
2024 saw strong participation in the project.
“Last year was another great year,” Sarah said.
“I think being able to have the boxes in store helps as well. People just wander in and see what it’s all about.”
For those unable to collect a box in person, Sarah said organisers are happy to help.
“You can always message one of our pages on Facebook or Instagram, and we can drop boxes to them if they can’t get in,” she said.
To make participation simpler, the return window has been extended.
Boxes can now be returned between December 8 and December 19.
“Last year, we had 150 in the end. We are over 600 in the last three years combined, which is pretty special. It just shows what you can do when people work together.”
She said the initiative is also a great way for children to learn about giving back.
And for those unable to fill an entire box, there are additional options to contribute, thanks to Wren Chiropractic and the Salvation Army.
“For some people who might not be able to commit to filling a whole box but want to get involved, we have Wren Chiropractic and the Salvos boxes, so that people can bring in just an individual item or two that can be grouped together.”
Workplaces are also encouraged to take part by creating a business box where staff contribute individual items.
This year, the Reverse Advent Calendar project will work closely with the Salvation Army to distribute the completed boxes to people across the Ararat and Stawell communities.
All donations will stay within the Ararat and Stawell area, ensuring support goes directly to local families.
