North Park revs up for community event

STAWELL’S North Park will take on a different energy next month from its usual cricket matches and footy training, when the CKS Swifts Football Netball Club brings engines, stalls and families together for its second-ever Swap Meet and Show ’n’ Shine. Set for Sunday, February 22, the event returns after a standout debut last year that surprised organisers with both its scale and its community response.

Club volunteer Robert Carey said the first event quickly grew beyond expectations.

“We had over 1000 people through the gate last year,” Mr Carey said, “For something we were running for the first time, that was really encouraging.”

That turnout translated into more than just a busy day at the park. Mr Carey said the funds raised were channelled straight back into the club, delivering tangible improvements.

“The money went towards things like a new scoreboard and signage,” he said, “It made a real difference for us.”

This year’s event again combines two familiar draw-cards: a Show ’n’ Shine for car enthusiasts and a swap meet for those keen to browse, sell or uncover a long-forgotten treasure. Gates will open at 7am, with Show ’n’ Shine entries from 8am and judging at noon, while swap meet and market stallholders are encouraged to set up very early at least an hour before gates open, or even do it the night before.

Show ’n’ Shine entries will cost $10 per vehicle, while swap meet sites are available for $20 per six-by-six-metre space, including entry for a car or trailer and two tickets. Market stalls are welcome, and no pre-bookings are required.

Public entry will be $5, with children under 16 admitted free, and organisers have emphasised that it’s a cash-only event.

Mr Carey said one of the event’s strengths was its ability to bring together people with very different interests.

“It’s not just for car people,” he said, “There’s something there for families, people who like a browse, and anyone who just wants to get out and enjoy the day.”

Food and coffee vans will be on site, and North Park’s open layout and playground are expected to again make it an easy place for families to spend a few relaxed hours.

For stallholders travelling from outside the district, the club will also host a Saturday night meal at the clubrooms from 6.30pm, offering a chance to settle in ahead of the event.

Mr Carey said the club hoped the Swap Meet and Show ’n’ Shine would continue to grow into a regular fixture on Stawell’s calendar, not just as a fundraiser, but as a genuine community gathering.

“It’s a good way to support the club,” he said, “but it’s also about bringing people together and making something positive happen in town.”
