Lisa Curry delivers a powerful message in Skipton
SKIPTON and district residents gathered last week to celebrate Women’s Health Week, with this year’s theme “Say Yes to You.”
The event encouraged women to check in, speak up and prioritise their wellbeing.
A highlight of the day was hearing from former Olympian Lisa Curry, who shared her personal journey of success, discipline, and determination.
Beaufort Skipton Health Service Chief Executive Officer Meryn Pease said having Lisa Curry visit was a special moment for the community. “It’s absolutely amazing to bring in such a calibre speaker to come and talk to our little community,” she said.
“Women’s Health Week is so important, we put everybody else first, but to be able to take some time out and put yourself first and listen to Lisa, her motivation and her speaking was just amazing, her life journey and everything that she’s done.”
Lisa Curry spoke candidly about her life, from her early drive to reach the Commonwealth Games at 16 years old, to her more recent focus on raising awareness about heart disease and holistic health.
“Prevention is one of the best things you can do for yourself,” she said.
She also shared the motto given to her by psychologist Dr Dennis Waitley, “Depend on Yourself,” as a guiding principle in her sporting and personal journey.
“Who do you want to be, what do you want to do, where do you want to go? These are questions you have to ask yourself,” she said.
“We are only here for a short amount of time, so it’s really important to make the choices that give us the best possible opportunity to live our best life.”
Lisa’s drive to better herself, she now shares with others and encourages those she meets to better themselves.
“We only have the choice to live our best life. Make a difference for yourself, your family, for the people in life you love. You only get one life, you only get one chance at it.”
