As an Lawyer, you are responsible for providing legal support on a range of government legal issues, under the direction, guidance and support of Senior Lawyers and the General Counsel. You will work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to understand their policy objectives, including their strategic and operating environments, so that you can draft sound legal advice and effectively communicate legal risks and issues. Your responsibilities will be:
- Drafting practical and technically sound legal advice that reflects a sound understanding of the agency’s operations and strategic environment
- Exercising sound judgement on legal and commercial issues
- Drafting documents (including briefs, instruments, explanatory statements, agreements and correspondence)
- Identifying and helping to manage risk for the Commission (both legal and non-legal)
- Building productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Developing client relationships
- Developing subject matter expertise
- Assisting to brief and manage external legal services providers
- Working collaboratively with other enabling services functions in the department
- Helping to ensure the agency complies with the Legal Services Directions 2017.
APS5 Lawyer
The following skills and experience are required:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in at least one of the following practice areas: administrative law, legislation development, employment law, commercial and procurement, FOI, privacy, litigation, dispute resolution or corporate and HR matters
- Ability to build productive working relationships with clients
- Ability to assist in negotiating and influencing outcomes
- Ability to contribute towards the planning and management of complex legal projects.
APS6 Lawyer
The following skills and experience are required:
- 1 - 2 years’ post admission experience, preferably in a government in-house environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in at least one of the following practice areas: administrative law, legislation development, employment law, commercial and procurement, FOI, privacy, litigation, dispute resolution or corporate and HR matters
- Experience instructing external legal counsel on straightforward and medium complexity matters
- Ability to build productive working relationships with clients at all levels
- Ability to negotiate and influence outcomes
- Demonstrated understanding of Whole of Government legislative and policy frameworks
- The ability to plan and manage complex legal projects.
