Owner and winemaker Tom Guthrie said the recognition was a proud moment for the team.

“Very excited to pick up a trophy at what’s our most significant local wine show,” he said.

“Their entries were up 20%, so there’s a lot of competition, wineries from Geelong, Macedon, and all across Western Victoria.”

Grampians Estate also walked away with gold medals for their signature shiraz varieties, a category Mr Guthrie says represents the heart of their craft.

“What we do best,” he said.

While they missed out on the top prize of Best Wine of the Show, Mr Guthrie said the recognition was invaluable.

“It’s really valuable for all the wineries to be able to benchmark their wines against the region’s best,” he said.

“They are experienced judges, they know what makes an exceptional wine, and when you get gold medals or a trophy, it’s the top 3–4% of wines for the whole show. That recognition means you’ve got everything right in the winemaking process and you’ve been able to shine amongst the very best.”

Mr Guthrie said the event was also a strong showing for the region.

“A lot of Grampians wines did really well in the show, which just highlights how significant our area is in the whole of Western Victoria.”
