At the annual RSL ball in Melbourne at the weekend, Ms Russell was presented with an Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award.

RSL President Frank Neulist said Ms Russell gives so much of herself to the local veteran community.

“Leading our RSL Active program with strength, compassion, and resilience, providing welfare assistance even while navigating challenges of her own. Her dedication and spirit inspire us all.

“We couldn’t be prouder of you, Lyn. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition,” he said.

Ms Russell was nominated by Mr Neulist who stated she had made an enormous difference to the organisation.

“Since 1919, Ararat RSL had been a male dominated environment until (Lyn) moved to Ararat.

“As a veteran herself, Lyn volunteered as a badge seller for Anzac and poppy appeals,” he said.

After some time, Ms Russell’s organisational skills were noticed and she was asked to become the appeals co-ordinator.

Under Ms Russell’s leadership, RSL appeals earnings have tripled, with this year’s Anzac appeal raising nearly $17,000.

In his nomination, Mr Neulist said Ms Russell continues to work tirelessly for the RSL, despite some recent health issues.

“With long term health issues which include weekly chemo she has never waivered in her commitment and I am proud to nominate her for an award before her peers.”
