Bob set to reclaim top job

ARARAT Rural City Councillor Bob Sanders is set to return as Ararat Mayor when councillors meet next Tuesday. As the Advocate reported several months ago, current Mayor Jo Armstrong won’t recontest the position as she eyes a seat in the Victorian Parliament as the Nationals candidate for Ripon. Cr Sanders had been Mayor in 2023-24 and was expected to continue for a second term until a last minute push to return Cr Armstrong to the job.

Councillors have remained tight lipped about next week’s vote, however it is understood Cr Sanders will get the backing of his colleagues to take the job.

Cr Sanders wasn’t keen to make public comment about his position when contacted this week.

“I am interested but anything can happen,” he said.

It is rumoured two councillors will seek the position of Deputy Mayor – Cr Teli Kaur and Cr Peter Joyce.

Cr Kaur said she would be keen on the job if her colleagues agree.

“Cr Rob Armstrong called me the day before yesterday and he’s happy to nominate me,” Cr Kaur said.

“I have loved my first year on council and this is a great opportunity to learn and grow.

Cr Joyce said he was keeping his options open.

“I haven’t made a final decision yet.

“I think I’m too busy to step up and I don’t have the experience yet,” he said.

Councillors will meet at 6pm Tuesday to vote on who will fill the two positions.

The Mayor receives an annual salary of $89,323 plus a car and other expenses while Councillors receive an annual wage of $28,110.

The Deputy Mayor’s position attracts a salary of $44,661.
