Now participating for the third time, Mr Black is among 50 winemakers competing for the People's Choice Award, which celebrates emerging wine producers and provides wine lovers with the opportunity to vote for their favourites.

“I've sent off my Cinco Rojas, which is the Spanish and Portuguese blend, and my Miss Piggy, which is a Muscat and Riesling blend,” Mr Black said.

“It's two bit more interesting wines, a little bit out of the ordinary.”

The Young Gun of Wine Awards focus on emerging wine labels and winemakers under 45 years of age, highlighting innovation, creativity and leadership within the Australian wine industry.

For Mr Black, the awards are also an opportunity to showcase the Grampians wine region to a wider audience.

“Try and put a spotlight out here. We are still making some great wines, we're still a bit of an unknown region,” he said.

The awards bring together some of the country's most promising young winemakers, something Mr Black enjoys being part of.

“Wine making is a very traditional, typically older crowd, so it's nice to be part of a bit younger crew,” he said.

Despite qualifying for this year's competition, Mr Black joked his time as a "young gun" may be coming to an end.

“It'll probably be my last time, I'm getting a bit grey in the beard to be a young gun anymore,” he said.
