ARTS presents awards for Grease

FOLLOWING the successful staging of Grease at the Ararat Town Hall in June, Ararat Regional Theatre Society presented several awards to cast and crew members. More than 1400 people supported live, local theatre during the season’s run, and were astounded at the talent Ararat and surrounds has produced.

Director Russell Purdie said he was so proud of the entire cast and crew of Grease, who all came together to produce a high quality, high energy production that attracted huge audiences.

“Our audiences came from Ararat, Stawell, Beaufort, Horsham, Ballarat and everywhere in between to see the show and support our cast, it was very gratifying to see such support,” he said.

At the conclusion of each Ararat Regional Theatre Society production, ARTS awards its Director's Award to a cast or crew member who embodies its philosophy of inclusivity, teamwork, friendship, encouragement and kindness.

This year, Grease Director Russell Purdie presented the award to Maree Fraser, who not only took on the role of Teen Angel, but also managed the costume department and acted as assistant musical director.

“Maree's contributions to our production of ‘Grease’ this year have been nothing short of extraordinary. Though her role as Teen Angel was smaller than her previous roles, she delivered an exceptional performance with her superb singing voice and excellent characterisation,” Mr Purdie said.

“Beyond the stage, Maree took on the crucial role of running our costuming department. Her leadership and creativity resulted in an outstanding array of costumes, flawlessly executed from concept to completion, including coordinating photo shoots and international sourcing. Maree also served as Assistant Vocal Director, helping to maintain our high vocal standards and lending her expertise to shape the show.

“Additionally, Maree has been a supportive presence for our cast and crew, offering guidance and a listening ear whenever needed. Her approachability and kindness embody the spirit of ARTS, making her an invaluable member of our team.”

This year, for the first time, ARTS introduced the Rising Star Award, presented to an on stage performer, who has shown dedication to their role, a willingness to take direction and who has performed their role exceptionally.

This year the Director presented the Rising Star Award to Aylah Knight, who portrayed the role of Patty Simcox.

“When a character has limited time on the stage, but one’s eyes are drawn to them, Aylah’s portrayal of Patty Simcox has been simply superb,” Mr Purdie said.

“As has her attitude right through rehearsals and the shows, witnessed by her willingness  to step up into this role. Aylah has performed for many years with ARTS and Ararat Musical Comedy Society, but in her first role, she has shown a wonderful ability to bring a character to life.

“Aylah was always willing to listen, to take on advice and has brought a great deal of humour and amazing characterisation to the role.”

ARTS will now begin preparing for its annual end of year production, which will be announced soon, while also beginning plans for the 2027 musical production.
